North Avoca Garden

Early last week I was asked to call in to see the progress of a garden that we designed a few years ago. Good gardens aren’t built overnight as they are on television, and the bespoke screen that we had designed to give the owners privacy had just been installed. On this project we have used a variety of materials such as concrete, brick and stone and although the planting is fresh, in my mind’s eye I can see it mature. There’s an unusual mix of plants that originated from Japan, such as the red-stemmed maple that will overhang the gate, dwarf Aucuba `Rozannie’, Ardisia crenata with glossy red berries and grasses such as the Miscanthus that are planted near the courtyard gate. I’m looking forward to watching this garden grow up – we still have a water bowl to be installed and maybe a contemporary sculpture…
